2024 Ministry of Clouds
Silk & Stone Grenache

Every vineyard has its own vocabulary, some speak loudly with fruit, but this remarkable Clarendon site has always whispered with texture.

Planted in 1922 by the Smart family, and cared for now by the third generation, it is simply the highest, coolest and therefore latest ripening bushvine Grenache vineyard in McLaren Vale.

Sitting at the very edge of McLaren Vale where it meets the Adelaide Hils, facing south, with altitude tempering the warmth and ancient rocky soils producing Grenache of striking perfume, a savoury complexity and a finely etched tannin line to provide a floating persistence.

Every vineyard teaches us something different. The Smart family has taught us that power and elegance are never opposing ideas. At its best, Grenache can possess both, carried not by weight but by extraordinary energy and length.

Great vineyards leave fingerprints that no winemaker could ever imitate.

  • “Pale in the glass and evocatively aromatic…Sour cherry, Campari, wormwood, dried orange peel and coriander seed. And yes, it tastes rocky and mineral and is silkily supple, as per the name. Grenache’s tendency to bountiful red fruits is so well measured here, the balance between savouriness and fruitfulness à point, the wine serenely medium weight yet so complex and layered. A lovely thing." 97 points

  • “….floral and aromatic, fine in palate weight and yet persistent both in shape and length….This is a super wine."
