Our Story
There was never a grand plan to become winemakers.
Ministry of Clouds grew from our curiosity. A love of wine is only the price of admission these days. Equally, our obsession for gastronomy, travel, art and culture have shaped how we see the world, and ultimately, how we make wine.
Long before our names appeared on a label, we spent more than a shared three decades immersed in wine, working alongside growers, importers, family-owned wineries and some of the great wine domains of the world. Those years taught us to taste carefully, to listen more than we spoke, and to appreciate that the finest wines are often those that reveal themselves quietly over time.
When Ministry of Clouds began in 2012, it wasn’t because we thought the world needed another winery. Rather, we sought a space to enable us to express our own quiet voice in the clamour of our industry.
For us, it wasn’t about following fashion nor adopting fixed ideas of what Australian wine should be. Instead, our rebel hearts questioned everything, revelling in the freedom to reimagine what is and acted only on the things that resonated for us.
Inspired by the savoury structure and longevity of Europe’s great wines, while embracing the brightness, aromatics and generosity of Australia’s best vineyards, we find ourselves at the intersection of these two worlds.
Today we are privileged to farm our own vineyard, The Chase, 11 hectares perched high above the Onkaparinga Gorge in McLaren Vale’s historic Seaview district. Alongside it sits a small collection of vineyards in McLaren Vale, the Adelaide Hills and Clare Valley, each chosen not simply by economics or ease, but for the character of the place and the people who care for it.
Our goal is to not impose ourselves upon these vineyards, but to understand them. To farm thoughtfully, to work with patience, and to allow each season to reveal its own gentle fingerprint on what we produce.
Along the way we have learnt that making wine is an exercise in both intention and humility.
Our name, Ministry of Clouds, is a reminder of that.
Sustainable winemaking
The Ministry of Clouds wines are shaped by a global perspective but utterly committed to being authentic expressions of Australian vineyards.
