Of all the great grape varieties, Riesling is perhaps the most transparent expression of place. There is just nowhere to hide. The clarity and character of vineyard, every decision throughout the growing season and any stray hand in the winery is laid bare for all to witness.
We've long loved the more crystalline expressions of single vineyard Watervale Riesling, where a sensitively grown vineyard from the 1970’s planted into Terrarossa, limestone and slate, with warm days and cool nights combine to produce a wine of purity, precision and longevity.
Riesling has never been a variety that rewards winemaker ego or heavy handed intervention. It asks for thoughtful farming, careful restraint and us growing in confidence to let the vineyard speak for itself.
Few grape varieties evolve as dramatically with time, though delicious in their youth, the finest Rieslings build remarkable layers of complexity with time.
Like all great stories, they reward patience.
