2026 Ministry of Clouds
McLaren Vale Picpoul

Lip Stinger...

Picpoul quite literally translates as Lip Stinger, an ancient Mediterranean variety cultivated for centuries along the sun-drenched coastline of southern France. Celebrated for its remarkable ability to retain freshness beneath a blazing summer sun, it has long been prized for its vibrant citrus character, naturally bright acidity and enduring affinity with seafood.

At The Chase vineyard, and when meagre funds allowed, Picpoul was one of the first varieties we knew we wanted to work with. As McLaren Vale continues to warm, we've become increasingly fascinated by grapes that don't simply tolerate these conditions, but instead genuinely thrive within them. On our rocky hillside, Picpoul feels completely at home.

Refreshing without being simple and vibrant without trying too hard, Picpoul reminds us that sometimes the future of Australian wine may lie in varieties we’ve only just begun to understand.

  • (2025) “Estate grown... Excellent aromatics, flowers and herbs, lemon drops, green apple. Really tasty, balanced, a light chalky grip, a burst of citrus and green apple, with a finish of good length. Clean and bright. Thirst quenching and delightful."

  • (2025) "Ministry of Clouds has already proved that picpoul is not just a vehicle for acid, being characterful in its own quiet ways. This reaffirms that. Decked out with light spring florals, sea-breeze-y salt-tinged ozone notes scenting fruit characters of lemon and tart golden apple. Lightly framed, with lemon barley water texture and yes, crisp acidity, this is another lovely release."
